Why Rats Are Only With Us a Short While

One day, some angels went to God and asked if they might
spend some time on Earth, to learn and perhaps to teach.
He answered that some of the people might be frightened
of the angels, that His children's idea of beauty might
not be His own. The angels replied that maybe those who
could look past the differences deserved the blessings
that they could give. But God was still concerned. The
angels needed Heaven's air to breathe; they would
suffocate down on Earth. The angels promised to hold
their breath as long as possible, and would return when
they could not hold it anymore. God agreed and sent down
the angels.

Many people were frightened of these creatures, despised
them, and tried to kill them in large numbers. However,
the few who recognized the angelic qualities in the beings
took them in and sheltered and fed them. In return, they
received more joy and laughter then they could possibly
imagine. But alas, soon the angels could hold their breath
no longer. After just a short Earth time, they left to go
back to Heaven. But they were sure to tell the next group
of angels exactly who to seek out when they went down.

This list is in total chaos, because I've not updated it in years. I plan on updating the listing soon!

Stargazer

Star was my first rat ever that I got when I was about 12.  Star was in a feeder bin at my local feed store crammed in a 10 gallon tank with at least 10 other rats.  I saw Star trying to escape as I was walking by to get horse feed and of course she came home with me riding on my shoulder.

I began to learn about rats and studied these unique animals with a passion...

2 weeks after Star came home she had a litter of babies who died of phenomena at 3 weeks of age, and 2 weeks later she died of phenomena. It was very heart wrenching and I swore I'd never own another rat...

Charlie

Charlie was a blue rat a friend bought at a pet store. I decided Charlie should be on here too as he as well as Star were my first intros to rats.

I do not remember how long Charlie lived or what exactly he died of (I was about 13-14 at the time) but I remember the many looks I'd get walking down the road with a huge male rat on my shoulders!

Albeniy

I got Albeniy a few years after getting my first rat after swearing I'd never own another rat again.  Albeniy was a champagne pet store girl I found while picking up cat food for a friend.

Albeniy was very well trained and had free run of my bedroom when I was home and groomed me while sleeping with me every night.  She also went to school with me and helped me a lot with homework!

Lillei

My very first dumbo was a huge surprise when I found her in a pet shop.  Lillei was a black variberk who became friends with Albeniy

Benny

Ben was a siamese boy I found in a feeder bin and brought home.  I had seen 'siamese' rats on the websites and had fallen in love.  I bred Ben to Albeniy twice placing rats with school friends and teachers.  This was my first experience with rat breeding/genetics after studying.

Buoyancy

Buoyancy was a very happy brown (Maybe chocolate?) berkshire boy I got from the same feeder bin Benny was in.  My best friend through High school decided to keep these boys and I don't know how they are doing.

LNF Rosko
Aug. '01-May '02

Rosko was my first hairless rat. He came home thanksgiving and left memorial day weekend.

Rosko used to sleep with me and go almost everywhere with me asleep in my sleeve. Rosko was a great friend I had in a time of need and is greatly missed.

Rosko was bred once his litter can be seen here

CWR Geduld
11/01-6/02

Geduld was a sweet boy who lived up to his names meaning 'Patience' in german. Geduld was always there to brighten my day with kisses and his soft velveteen coat.

Geduld's death was very sudden and the cause is unknown but may have to do with heat and stress or from choking.  I found Geduld when I was going to go get him to spend time with him about a half hour I had fed them.

CAR Fival

Fival only lived with me for a few hours and died a tragic death when he was attacked at 4 weeks of age by a 7 week old rat...  The story is a tragic and very odd one.

Even in those few hours of nesting in my hair Fival brought me so much joy which I had missed so much not having a hairless boy around.

LCR Classy Lady
AKA Skittles
7/28/01-9/02

Skittles was a very smart girl who loved her space.  She never quite figured out shoulder riding but loved the free time in the rat room or bathroom!

We got Skittles as a trade from a breeder in CO where she had been bred once.  We never bred Skittles.

Nichie
7/01-6/02

Nichie was a black dumbo rat my ex brought home Sept '01 as a pet.  When Nichie was first handled he would scream bloodly murder when handled and try to jump out of your arms.  Nichie became a very cuddly boy who loved to go places- including walks on his leash at the local park!  He also loved taking showers with me and swimming.

Nichie passed away in my exs care due to an accident a few weeks after he and I had broke up when he had custody of him.

Nichies sweetness and kisses will always be remembered and are greatly missed.

Eagles Cleo
12/30/01-6/02

Cleo was a blazed cap-stripe agouti out of my first rattery litter.  Cleo was a VERY sweet kissy boy who I adored.  When my ex and I broke up we had a huge fight over who kept Nichie, Eagle and Cleo and I backed off unfortionally...

Cleo passed away in the same accident as Nichie and Eagle.  They will all forever be missed.

Eagles Eagle
2/2/02-6/02

Eagle was a black irish rex named because his irish pattern resembled an eagle foot.  Eagle was out of my second rattery litter.  My ex kept Eagle after our break up because he and Cleo were close buddies.

Eagle passed away with Nichie and Cleo.  Eagle will always be remembered as the escape artist of the boys cage, who always managed to find a way to get out and bed under the couch which was his favorite hiding place!

Hess
09/02-10/20/02

Hess was a blue double rex rescue rat my husband adopted after an Oregon rattery shut down and dumped off many rats as feeders.  She had said that Hess, and the other boys in his cage were 'worthless' and wouldn't make good pets!

Hess passed away during our virus outbreak after not responding to the first medication we tried.  We will forever remember the love Hess gave us and I will be forever grateful of how he opened my husband up and let him see just how wonderful rats can be.

Eagles Ariel
12/30/01-10/21/02

Ariel was the keeper out of my first rattery litter.  She was a blazed cap-stripe siamese dumbo.

Ariel was very cuddly and laid back.  She would sit on her butt on your hands for hours and loved to be with me and be a part of my life.

Ariel's death was very unexpected from the the virus.  We didn't have much time to help her when she got sick and she did not respond to medications.

Khats Logan
1/27/02-10/02

Logan was one of our babies who didn't respond to our first treatment attempts when the virus broke out.  When the virus hit we had no clue what it was and had problems diagnosing and finding a proper treatment for it.

Logan was a huge black dumbo masked who loved to cuddle.  Logan was famous for being my 'counselor'  by sitting in the crook of my arm and listening to me when I was upset about anything.

Logan was bred once for a beautiful litter of babies that can be viewed here

Eagles Spades
12/30/01-10/02

Spades was a rat from our first rattery litter we hadn't expected to keep until her home fell through and I didn't want to give her up!

Spades passed away soon after her sister Ariel during the virus attack.  Our 'chubby tubby' and all her cuddles, kisses and silly antics will be greatly missed.

HTR Sebast
10/27/01-10/02

Sebast was the first rat I ever got from a breeder.  He was a very quiet boy who was easy to handle and a joy to own.

Sebast was one of the many horrible losses during the virus outbreak, and is greatly missed.

CWR Sugar
11/01-10/02

Sugar was the first rat I reserved from a breeder, who I reserved a few months before she was even born.  She was always happy, and loved to explore.  When we first brought her home January '02 she figured out how to escape out of our new cage that night!

I miss my Sugar a lot.  Sugar was never bred because her activity level was a bit more then I preferred but she was a wonderful pet.

OFR Malamute
10/01-10/02

Malamute was a pet who was given to us by Debbi at Odd Fellows Rattery.  Malamute was very shy and at times couldn't even be handled so he was kept as a pet only and never bred.

We lost Malamute to the virus shortly after we lost his buddy Logan.

Candies of EAGL
Unknown-10/02

Candies was a rescue that came to me in April '02 when her owner could no longer keep her.

Candies was a sweet girl who was fun to own and was my first odd eye rat.  Candies was one of the last rats to pass away during the virus outbreak after treatment was started.

Dh4 Claddagh
10/01-10/02

Claddagh was a beautiful mink based platinum.  Her sister Dh4 Pumpkin Pie got Best in Show at the Dec '01 RatsPacNW show where I got Claddy from.

Claddagh was my 'biggest fan' always watching me as I walked passed the cage or whenever I was in the room.  I tried to breed Clad a few times with no luck.  It was horrible to loose my Claddy and she's greatly missed.

EAGL Flame
4/30/02-10/02

Flame and her sister Zippo were my husbands first rats.  They were two beautiful girls out of my favorite buck Herr Blau.  Flame was the cuddly girl in the litter.  Flame was a 'daddies girl' who when out could usually be found crawling on Curtis.

Flame and her sister passed away 2 days apart during the virus outbreak.

EAGL Zippo
4/30/02-10/02

Zippo (Flames sister) was the 'wild child'.  She was always on the run!  When she would be out playing on the bed with Curtis and her sister she would find any way to get down (Even jumping) so she could run underneath and play hide and seek!

It was very hard on us to loose these wonderful friendly girls, esp with the involvement they had in our relationships beginnings.

EAGL Pixie
7/02-10/02

Pixie was a very hard loss..  she passed away in my arms after a long fight with the virus in which she didn't respond to any of the medication attempts.

Pixie was my keeper in a rescue litter.  I had fallen in love with her mother, Story and took Story and her 3 week old litter home with me shortly before I left on my trip to Oregon!

The love was worth the tears and I'm atleast glad that Pixie knew she was needed and loved before she passed away.

Sassy of EAGL
Summer '02-10/02

Sassy lived up to her name by being not only the smallest girl in the rattery- but by becoming the queen of the rattery shortly after she came home.  She was full of spunk and loved to give and receive affection.

We got Sassy 'on accident' while on a family vacation where we visited a pet store and fell in love with her out of a feeder bin.  Sass was one of Curts favorites.

Sassy passed away in my arms after fighting the virus for a few days.  We were unable to help her through the pneumonia and she waited 'til her daddy was gone to work, and she gave me a kiss before saying goodbye.

Dh4 Saucers
8/02-11/02

Saucers was a very large strong girl with alot of spunk.  She was 'queen' of the rattery and loved by everyone who knew her.

Saucers passed away from complications after she was infected by the virus.  She had scarring from the pneumonia and it was too much for our queen.

Saucers will always be remembered as the beautiful big 'quilted' (Patchwork) rat with a ton of spunk and charm.

CWR Lotus
1/02-10/02

Lotus passed away during our virus outbreak.  I fell in love with Lotus at the March RatsPacNW show and of course took her home!  She was a beautiful russian blue agouti who had a wonderful clown like personality.

We miss our little clown and look forward to meeting her again at the rainbow bridge.

Story of EAGL
Spring '02-12/02

Story was a very large girl with a ton of personality.  We fell in love with Story and her young litter while at a friends house and had to take her home.  She caught my heart from day one, loved belly kisses and attention.

Story passed away due to complications with her second litter.  I will always miss my wonderful Story with her shining eyes and warm kisses.

MR Lady in Black
-1/03

Ebony came to us from Colorado and a few weeks after that we lost her to strep which we picked up at the meet up.

It was very devastating to loose this girl before the problem was diagnosed and so soon after bringing her home.

CWR Herr Blau-
There are not enough words in the world to say how I feel about Blau...  He passed away due to heart failure (From complications of a previous illness) in Feb '03 at 'Farewell Bend' and will forever leave an empty spot in my heart.

We were blessed with an April '02 litter out of Blau.

CAR Hannah- Hannah prolapsed (almost unheard of in rats) after she had her first litter and passed on during her spay.  She was a wonderful sweet girl out of reknowned Dreamy owned by Marianne.  Hannah is missed by all who knew her.

VMRN Speedracer-
Racy was a very high strung girl, always on the move and hated physical attention.  That was what made her so admirable.

Racy passed away in Nov. '03 due to complications of a mammary tumor.  It's odd not having her with the other girls snatching food out of my hands, or running over books while I'm reading.

SFR Butterball-
Butterball was one of Curts babies.  We took him home after a meetup in MI and Curtis fell in love.  Butterball lived up
